The Oxpecker and the African Cape Buffalo

These two African creatures have an interesting symbiotic relationship. The small Oxpecker bird is often found on the backs of the 2,000 lb buffalo. The bird gets it's main supply of food by picking off bugs, ticks and maggots out of the buffalo's fur, leaving free of most pests. The oxpecker bird also will eat bugs out wounds, possibly preventing some infection the buffalo could possible endure. In addition to bugs being removed, the oxpecker also will warn the buffalo of predators by hissing or making noise if it spots a lion etc. Oxpecker's nests are usually lined with fur that they pull from the buffalo (ouch!). The relationship between the two is a mutualist symbiotic relationship, as both species benefit from it.

Emerald wasp

Sometimes I have a really bad case of curiosity for extremely awkward and weird subjects (so sorry). While doing my research I discovered a peculiar branch of parasitism, endoparasitoid. Which basically means that certain types of insects don't like to raise their own kids and end up making another insect to do ALL the work. The Emerald Wasp is one of these insects while making cockroaches do their work for them, though against their will. The wasp actually turns roaches into a "zombie" with a particular type of venom and then literally barricades it into a burrow so the larvae can grow up and do the exact same thing. One thing that i found particularly interesting was the fact that the larvae can actually sanitize the roach with a blend of antimicrobials it can secrete on its own. I EVEN FOUND A VIDEO OF IT ALL, you know you want to watch it!

The Angler Fish

The Angler Fish

So my initial intentions of doing the angler fish were primarily to use this picture and post a very funny video on them as well, but after some research I realized they actually have not one, but wait for it.. TWO examples of symbiosis! First being their lure located on the top of their heads and the second being the male and females angler fishes relationship. The lure is completely mobile and can be waved all around to attract pray as well as the male anglerfish. The light is actually produced by bacteria, unlike other sea animals like the crystal jellies that produce their own light. Their relationship with the bacteria is a perfect example of symbiosis, the bacteria enter the lure through pores and can gain nutrients and have shelter from their host and the female anglerfish benefits from the light produced. The example of the female and male angler fish is described very thoroughly in the video posted, but basically the male angler fish attaches itself to the female and becomes nothing but a pair of gonads that is solely there to release sperm to reproduce. Enjoy the video and the lovely, lovely angler fish.

Ambrosia Beetles

I found this beautiful picture today when I was searching through symbiotic animal articles. It's a piece of a tree with tunnels carved out by Ambrosia Beetles. These beetles are symbiotic with Ambrosia Fungi which is only found in the xylem (defined by my MacBook as "the vascular tissue in plants that conducts water and dissolved nutrients upward from the root and also helps to form the woody element in the stem") tissue of dead or dying trees where Ambrosia Beetles have lived. The Beetles burrow into the wood of the tree to consume the fungi and lay their eggs (also interesting- these beetles are mostly asexual; they clone themselves) and in eating the fungi they store its spores in a part of their bodies called their mycangia and then travel to another tree to burrow again and transport the fungi and let it grow with other kinds of Ambrosia fungi. Through further reading I found that one researcher discovered that some Ambrosia Beetles have found a way to find already established tunnels with other fungi growing inside, eliminating the need for the beetle to carry the fungi to a new tree and create their 'fungus gardens'. These beetles have lost their mycangia through evolution.
